Five actions wildlife in Scotland needs to recover – and how you can help make it happen.

Scotland has just elected a new parliament of 129 MSPs, and a new government led by John Swinney. This parliament has a huge responsibility to stop wildlife loss and protect 30% of Scotland’s lands and seas by 2030. That’s just four years away – but it’s achievable, if we act now.

This Scottish Government inherits an extraordinary opportunity. The Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2026 was passed by MSPs in January, providing a framework to drive forward some of the crucial action that must be taken for nature.

Scotland is home to extraordinary wildlife, from Golden Eagles to basking sharks, but it’s in serious trouble. Despite what you might think, we’re one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

Together, we can turn the tide of biodiversity loss in Scotland. We can save species like Puffins, Red Squirrels, and Wildcats from the brink of national extinction. But first, MSPs need to know their constituents care about nature.

That’s where you come in. Here are five key actions to restore Scotland’s nature, and how your voice could make all the difference.

Your voice can help shape a future where Scotland’s alive with wildlife again.

Five actions to save Scotland’s nature

  1. Set strong targets to restore nature

Help bring Scotland’s landscapes bursting back to life with ambitious targets now. Once set, every future government will be legally required to act to meet them.

  1. More support for nature-friendly farming

Improve support for farmers and crofters to deliver nature-friendly farming. The way in which Scotland’s farmers and crofters manage their land and grow food matters for wildlife, climate and communities. And without nature, and a suitable climate, farming itself is at risk.

  1. Stop needless wildlife deaths at sea

Urgently introduce vital measures to help save thousands of seabirds, including Fulmars and Gannets, from being killed in fishing gear in Scottish waters.  As Scotland’s globally important seabirds face so many other threats, this significant pressure can and should be removed.

  1. Protect the most important places for nature

Stop devastating projects like Berwick Bank offshore wind farm and support development that leaves nature in a better place. Protecting our most vital places for nature is essential to safeguard vulnerable wildlife and drive nature’s recovery.

  1. Invest more in the Nature Restoration Fund

Drive real change for wildlife across Scotland's landscapes by investing more in this vital funding pot which has worked wonders for species and habitats across Scotland.

Why this matters for people too

We cannot separate ourselves from nature. We are a part of it and we depend on it. Healthy ecosystems store carbon, reduce flooding and improve our wellbeing. By restoring nature, we secure a safer, healthier future for people and wildlife alike.

How you can help

Using your voice makes a massive difference for the wildlife you love. MSPs listen to the issues they hear about from constituents most, so make sure nature is one of them. Whether you’ve noticed nature loss in your area, are worried about a damaging local development or want your MSP to call for one of the five actions above, speaking out has a real impact.

Meeting your MSP face-to-face is one of the most powerful ways to ensure nature isn’t forgotten. We’ve made it easy for you to email your new MSPs to arrange a meeting about nature. You don’t need to be an expert, just talk about what's important to you. When you speak from the heart, they listen.
