We are experiencing flooding on the reserve and some of our paths and hides are shut. For current details visit our reserve Facebook page or contact the reserve office.
You'll find Strumpshaw Fen on the River Yare in Norfolk, around six miles east of Norwich. The reserve itself has a fantastic range of Broadland habitats and wildlife to discover.
Enjoy a walk round the reedbeds, woodlands and orchid-rich meadows before an al fresco cuppa from the visitor centre. Little ones will love our den building area along our adventure trail. If the weather's kind, why not stop for a picnic too?
Song of the Reeds
We are delighted that the landscape and wildlife of the reserve was used for the set of the gripping new Radio 4 drama, Song of the Reeds. Find out more about the reserve's role in the drama here.
This is a great location to spot Kingfishers
The vibrant azure and copper feathers of the Kingfisher make them one of the UK’s most colourful and instantly recognisable birds. But blink and you’ll miss them – they dart along rivers and streams at high speeds. RSPB nature reserves and our care-taking teams provide safe wetland havens for these special birds and their fishy prey.

2 Blue Badge spaces Spaces 150m away from the Visitor Centre. Surface is gravel and mostly flat, but slightly uneven in places. Overflow has grass surface, flat but uneven.
No lighting. Entry to the reserve involves crossing a railway line. If you have mobility difficulties or poor eyesight, please use the phone at the gate to check with the signal operator that no trains are coming.
No accessible toilet but there are larger cubicles, situated at the reserve entrance and with level access.
Our baby changing facilities are located in the toilets in a separate toilet block at the entrance to the reserve.
Woodland trail earth and grass surfaces, occasionally bumpy, mostly flat but with two short steep slopes.
Meadow trail flat, uneven with 11 steps up to the riverbank. The path can be wet and muddy after rain.
Fen trail is earth and grass, mostly flat, but uneven and bumpy. Often wet and muddy in winter.
Benches are located along all three trails.

Our toilets are open daily, 9:30am-5pm.
They are located in a separate block at the entrance to the reserve.
BBQs are a fire risk, endangering other people and the precious wildlife and habitats here. They are not permitted on the reserve at any time.
Sorry, dogs are not permitted at Strumpshaw Fen, except assistance dogs, due to the sensitive wildlife and habitats here.
Other exciting dog walking routes are available to enjoy in the local area, with dog-owners welcome to park at Strumpshaw Fen and walk to nearby RSPB Buckenham Marshes.
Dogs die in hot cars, please do not leave your dog in the car when visiting us.
Assistance dogs are welcome in all parts of the reserve.
