Taking part is as easy as 1, 2, 3
1. Register today
Sign up (it’s free!) and you’ll get all the information, links and downloadable resources you’ll need for running your Big Schools’ Birdwatch. This year, all resources are available digitally, which provides thousands more teachers with a range of quality materials to use with their pupils.
All our resources support curriculum learning, including providing you with historical records of Big Schools’ Birdwatch, so you can compare what you see. All resources are available bilingually for schools in Wales.
We have activities you can do before, during and after your Birdwatch, including ones to help your pupils to consider how being in nature impacts their mental health and wellbeing.
2. Get counting
Get counting in your school grounds at any time between 6 January and 13 February 2026.
Why not make your Big Schools’ Birdwatch count towards an RSPB Wild Challenge Award? This free scheme encourages pupils to discover more wildlife and help the nature in your school grounds.
3. Submit your results
Submit your results online. It’s easy to do with your class interactively on the whiteboard. We really want to know what you see, even if you see nothing at all.
You’ll receive certificates to print out for your class. You’ll also get links to more resources including additional historical data, which you can use to compare your sightings with national results from previous years. In addition, you’ll receive follow-up lessons specially produced by Archives IT, in collaboration with the RSPB.
You need to submit your results by 23 February 2026.
