Wetland expansion brings new hope for rare wading birds at RSPB Otmoor

A new 21-hectare extension to RSPB Otmoor is set to boost populations of some of the UK’s most threatened wetland birds and strengthen the site’s role as a haven for nature in the heart of Oxfordshire.

Conservation work to help wetland birds thrive

Work is now underway to transform former farmland into a thriving wetland landscape rich in life. The project will extend Otmoor’s existing floodplain grazing marsh, one of the UK’s priority habitats, creating shallow pools, known as scrapes, and footdrains to retain water and support breeding waders such as lapwing, redshank, curlew, and snipe.

Seeds collected from the neighbouring Otmoor reserve will be used to restore native wetland plants, ensuring the new site mirrors the natural character of this nationally important wetland. In time, the area will also attract a wider range of invertebrates, providing food for birds and other wildlife.

The first RSPB Biodiversity Net Gain project

The expansion marks the launch of the RSPB’s first Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) site, developed in partnership with Cherwell District Council. Through the creation of a local habitat bank, the project will enable investment from new developments to deliver real, long-term benefits for wildlife close to home.

The RSPB’s Chief Operating Officer, James Robinson, and Cherwell District Council councillor, Jean Conway, said:

James Robinson, the RSPB’s Chief Operating Officer, said:

“We’re delighted to be launching our first Biodiversity Net Gain site at RSPB Otmoor, a haven for wildlife in the heart of Oxfordshire. Otmoor is already a stronghold for wading birds, and this extension will create even more space for nature to thrive.

Our approach is rooted in ecological science and long-term care. The habitats we restore here will be managed well beyond the required 30 years, ensuring lasting benefits for wildlife, people, and the climate.”

Councillor Jean Conway, Cherwell District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning and Development Management, said:

“Otmoor is one of Oxfordshire’s great natural treasures, home to some of the UK’s most beautiful and threatened wading birds. Partnering with the RSPB allows us to deliver meaningful biodiversity gains right here in our district.”

As the new wetland takes shape, it will not only provide safe nesting grounds and feeding areas for birds but also help store carbon, improve water quality, and make the local landscape more resilient to climate change.
